Re: Big Blue Jamboree

I was told earlier this evening it would be more of a practice with a highly-controlled scrimmage session...could be wrong...but that is what I was told before i left GC today.
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....

Well that sucks... Im going to check it out and then catch the WC/JB game. I think that will be a preview of the state title game this year.

Re: Big Blue Jamboree

I just got back from it. It was OK but barely worth going to, even if it was free.

The first part consisted of several (and by several I mean SEVERAL in all caps) special-teams practices starting with what seemed like dozens and dozens of kickoffs, punts, and field goals, all of which weren't done at full contact.

Powell Valley's offense was pretty decent with Mitchell running alot after dropping back to pass and also with a fairly strong running game with one of the Pinkstons as the main RB. (Can't remember if it was Myron or Malcolm.)

Powell Valley's defense was pretty good with some nice tackling and good work on the line, but overall nothing outstanding or "stunning" as one member put it.

Gate City's offense was pushed forward more by the running game with Tyler Parks getting a few good runs and almost every RB putting forth great effort to get yardage. The passing game was hurt badly by a line that was constantly pummeled. I felt sorry for the QB and some of the great passes he threw were dropped by receivers who should have made the catches.

Gate City's defense, like Powell Valley's, was good but not oustanding or anything to write home about.

Overall, I was not very impressed with either team. I have a feeling both will be tough and should make it to the playoffs or at least come close, but Powell Valley didn't seem as powerful as they were last year and Gate City seemed much improved from last year but still not at the level they were once at a few years ago.

I know scrimmages aren't great at deciding how good a team should be bout which team do you think was better?

I personally was more impressed with Gate City because Powell Valley has great talent but seems very sloppy in terms of execution.

That's not to say Gate City didn't look sloppy, either, but I just can't help but feel very underwhelmed by what Powell Valley showed tonight. They're good, but definitely didn't seem improved over last year if at all.

Gate City was missing Kern and Jones. Not sure why Harvey wasn't playing defense tonight. I'm like Rotten, that was the oddest scrimmage I've been to. Both teams have very good special teams. I still look for us to get mauled next week, but we should be in every game after that. You can never tell by these things though. Good luck to both teams. I think we'll both be fine down the road.

Re: Big Blue Jamboree

The score was just announced on WCYB:

Powell Valley - 6
Gate City - 0

That just goes to show how much of a stalemate the game really was. Both offenses just didn't get a whole lot going.

Beats me.. I don't think the scoreboard was even on was it? With the way they were doing things, it was hard to know what was going on and if a team even scored or not.

I didn't even think anyone would bother keeping score simply by the way the "scrimmage" began.
